Camp Bob Marshall

A Lakeside Forest Retreat

Camp Bob Marshall is nestled in the heart of the Black Hills National Forest, just six miles east of Custer, SD, along the tranquil shores of Bismarck Lake. Surrounded by towering pines, aspen groves, and weathered granite outcroppings, this 17-acre camp provides a serene natural sanctuary ideal for yoga and relaxation. The atmosphere is rustic yet welcoming – think cozy cabins, crackling campfires under the stars, and a calm lake reflecting the sky at dawn.

With over 60 years of history hosting gatherings, the camp radiates a warm, community-focused vibe where everyone feels at home. It's the perfect setting to unwind, breathe deeply, and immerse yourself in nature's healing embrace during our Yoga Camp 2025 retreat. Plus, being on the edge of Custer State Park means many of the Black Hills' most beautiful spots – from Sylvan Lake to the Needles – are only minutes away, offering plenty of inspiration for exploration.

  • Whole Foods to Fuel Your Soul: You'll be treated to delicious, nourishing meals lovingly prepared with whole foods that heal from the inside out. Our on-site holistic chef, Sandrine Pilaz, crafts each meal to energize and delight you – learn why everyone feels fantastic after a few days of Yoga Camp cooking! Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are included with your registration, so you can focus on your practice and having fun. (We happily accommodate dietary needs – vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, etc. – just let us know in advance.)

  • Cabins at Camp Bob Marshall

Rustic Lakeside Cabins: Unplug and unwind in quaint, rustic cabins on the campgrounds. With peaceful lake views and a cozy woodsy vibe, the cabins invite you to relax and connect with fellow campers. You'll bunk with a small group of like-minded yogis – ready to share laughter and late-night campfire stories under the stars. (Prefer quiet nights? We can group early-to-bed folks in their own cabin so everyone sleeps soundly.)

  • Sleeping Arrangements: Each cabin comes with bunk beds and a little potbelly stove for heat in case the mountain evenings get chilly. Restrooms and simple showers are available on-site for your comfort. If you'd rather sleep under the stars, you also have the option to bring your own tent instead of staying in a cabin – just let us know on your registration form. Either way, you'll wake up to fresh pine-scented air and the gentle sounds of nature each morning!

  • Included Amenities: The camp sits right on a tranquil lake, and kayaks and canoes are included for you to use at no extra cost (yes, you can paddle out whenever you like!). Just stroll down to the shore and hop in a kayak or canoe of your choice. Mats and basic yoga props will be available, but feel free to bring your favorite mat or meditation cushion. Everything is arranged so you can fully immerse yourself in the retreat without worry.

    Wildlife Spotting

For cycling enthusiasts, the Mickelson Trail is just minutes away from camp. This historic rail-trail offers miles of gorgeous scenery through the Hills – bring your bike and enjoy an afternoon ride.

Relaxing and Scenic Options Within 30 Minutes

  • Stone pathway between large rock formations leading to jagged mountain peaks and pine trees.

    Sylvan Lake

Often called the "crown jewel" of Custer State Park, Sylvan Lake enchants visitors with its crystal-clear waters and encircling granite boulders. A gentle one-mile trail winds around the lake's shore, offering gorgeous views at every turn (perfect for mindfulness walks or reflection by the water). Located about a 20-minute drive from camp, Sylvan Lake's calm, mirror-like surface and soaring rock formations make it an idyllic spot to picnic, dip your toes in the water, or simply soak up the beauty of the Black Hills.

  • Hammock, journal, climb a tree, try your hand at kayaking or canoeing.

    Needles Highway

This world-famous scenic drive (SD Highway 87) is a must-see route that you can easily hop on about 15 minutes from camp. The road meanders through forests and spires, featuring hairpin turns, single-lane tunnels carved through granite, and awe-inspiring views of the Needle-like rock pinnacles piercing the sky. You don't even have to leave your car to enjoy it – roll the windows down, breathe in the pine-scented air, and marvel at the dramatic scenery. Be sure to stop at overlooks along the way (including the iconic Needle's Eye formation) for stunning photos and moments of pure wonder.

    Cathedral Spires

These towering clusters of rock pinnacles, part of the Needles range, are truly soul-stirring to see up close. A short, moderate hike (about 1.5 miles one-way) on the Cathedral Spires Trail will bring you right to the base of these natural cathedrals, making you feel humbled among their grandeur. Even from the highway pull-off, you can admire the "cathedral" of granite spires reaching for the clouds. It's a peaceful spot to pause, listen to the breeze in the pines, and maybe meditate for a few minutes amidst Mother Nature's stone spires.

    Stockade Lake

At 130 acres, Stockade is the largest of Custer State Park's five lakes, yet it remains one of the quietest and most relaxing. Only a five-minute drive from camp, this lake is framed by forests and has easy pull-up access, making it great for a spontaneous outing. There's a small swimming beach and plenty of picnic nooks along the shore. You might take a leisurely walk on the lakeside trail or simply lounge by the water with a good book as you watch for birds and the occasional deer coming to drink. Stockade Lake's gentle waters and uncrowded feel make it a lovely spot to unwind and rejuvenate in nature.

  • Downtown Custer

If you're in the mood for a bit of local culture, the town of Custer is a quick 10-minute drive away. Custer's downtown area exudes a charming small-town atmosphere with its quaint shops, art galleries, and inviting cafés. Stroll the main street to browse local artisan crafts and Black Hills artwork, or treat yourself to a homemade pie or specialty coffee at a friendly mom-and-pop eatery. Keep an eye out for Custer's unique public art: the town has expressed its character in the form of colorful buffalo sculptures on nearly every corner – each one painted with a different theme – making for fun photo ops as you explore. It's a low-key, delightful way to spend an afternoon, blending relaxation with a touch of Western hospitality and community charm.
